Saturday's result

Tigers 4, Pirates 1

Pirates starter: Jeanmar Gomez 3 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 1 SO

Tigers starter: Drew Smyly 3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO

MVP stuff: Miguel Cabrera punished the prospect Gomez with a towering, two-run homer to right. Bright spot for Gomez was six groundouts.

No hero: Jerry Sands stepped to the plate in the seventh with a big chance, bases loaded and one out, as the tying run. But he bounced into a double play.

Whoa there:Starling Marte can fly, but he went well past halfway between first and second and was doubled up on a shallow pop by Alex Presley in the fourth.

Stock up:Projected setup men Mark Melancon and Jared Hughes each pitched a perfect inning of relief, pounding the ball low in the zone.

Stock down:Josh Harrison's 0-for-2 left him hitless in 10 spring at-bats, and he committed his third error by muffing a routine grounder to second.
