Pirates prospect Taillon shut down with groin injury
Jameson Taillon, the Pirates' top minor- league prospect, has been shut down in the Arizona Fall League due to a groin injury.
Taillon suffered the injury Oct. 8, when he pitched two innings for Scottsdale in its AFL opener. The right-hander allowed one unearned run on one hit, walked one and got three strikeouts.
During the outing, Taillon tweaked a groin muscle. The Pirates do not believe the injury to be serious.
“He is seeing the doctors (Monday), but we expect him to be ready for spring training,” assistant general manager Kyle Stark said via email.
The Pirates had hoped to use the AFL to build up Taillon's innings count. This summer, Taillon made 20 starts for Double-A Altoona and six for Triple-A Indianapolis. He threw a total of 147 1⁄3 innings and had a combined record of 5-10 with a 3.73 ERA and 1.324 WHIP.
Taillon will not pitch anywhere else this offseason, Stark said.
The AFL season runs through Nov. 14. The Pirates have seven players remaining on Scottsdale's roster: pitchers Matt Benedict, Phil Irwin, Zack Thornton and Tyler Waldron; outfielder Alex Dickerson; and infielders Alen Hanson and Gift Ngoepe.
