'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Six Pirates — Pedro Alvarez, Vin Mazzaro, Mark Melancon, Gaby Sanchez, Travis Snider and Neil Walker — were among the 146 major league players who filed for salary arbitration Tuesday.

Walker and Sanchez are in their second year of eligibility. The others are going through the process for the first time.

The filings were a formality, meaning none of the players — who are not yet eligible for free agency — have come to terms on a contract for 2014.

The next step in the process comes Friday when players' agents and teams swap salary figures. Negotiations can continue until an arbitration board announces a decision by choosing either the player or the team's number. Salary arbitration hearings will be in February.

Also Tuesday, the Pirates gave right-hander Jameson Taillon, their top pitcher prospect, a non-roster invitation to spring training camp. Catcher Carlos Paulino, first baseman Matt Hague and righty Zack Thornton also received non-roster invites.

Although it is unlikely he will make the Opening Day starting rotation, Taillon is expected to make his big league debut sometime this season. Taillon was the second overall draft pick in 2010 and also was in camp as a non-roster invitee last year.
