Spring training breakdown: Pirates 7, Red Sox 6

Pirates/MLB Videos

TUESDAY'S GAME

at Tigers

1:05 p.m.

Joker Marchant Stadium, Lakeland, Fla.

Radio: 93.7 FM

Tigers starter: RHP Rick Porcello

Pirates starter: RHP Charlie Morton

Monday, March 3, 2014, 5:54 p.m.

Good start: After going hitless in his first nine at-bats this spring, leadoff batter Starling Marte reached on an infield single in the first inning. Red Sox SS Brock Holt came up with the slow roller cleanly, but had no chance to throw out Marte.

Play it safe: Andrew McCutchen ripped a liner into the right field corner, made a smooth turn at first base ... and pulled up with a double. If this was the regular season, that's three bags for Cutch. No sense risking a strained hammy in a Grapefruit League game. Anyway, he stole third on the next pitch.

You are my sunshine: McCutchen misjudged A.J. Pierzynski's deep fly ball to center, which fell for a double. McCutchen lost the ball in the sun, which is a problem for outfielders at McKechnie Field from around 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. most days.

Stock up: Russell Martin homered twice in a span of four at-bats. He hit a solo shot Saturday against the Rays and smacked a two-run home run Monday.

Stock down: Red Sox RHP Brandon Workman was an emergency fill-in for Jake Peavy, who sliced his hand with a fishing knife. The Pirates knocked him around for five runs on five hits in 213 innings.
