Rally killers: Each of the Pirates' first four at-bat innings ended with double plays, including two strikeout-caught stealings. In the first inning, Andrew McCutchen whiffed and Josh Harrison was thrown out. In the third, Harrison struck out as Robert Andino was nabbed.

Not much to show: The Pirates got just four hits, all singles, in seven innings against CC Sabathia. The first two were soft loopers. Neil Walker reached on an infield single. The only well-struck ball was McCutchen's line drive to right field in the fourth inning.

Ouch: In the first inning, Yankees SS Derek Jeter fouled a ball off his shin and it seemed to foul up the rest of his at-bat. He never got comfortable in the box and wound up striking out with an off balance swing, chasing a 94 mph fastball that was out of the zone. “Sorry about that,” RHP Edinson Volquez said with a laugh. “He's a great hitter, one of the best of all time. It's going to be his final year, so I got lucky to face him.”

Stock up: Volquez labored in the first two innings, yielding four runs on four hits, then settled in. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, five on grounders and three with strikeouts. “My tempo and rhythm were better. Everything was on time,” he said. “Sometimes, there's a lot of adrenaline in the first two innings. After that, you shut it down and start to make better pitches.”

Stock down: It was scored a wild pitch, but C Tony Sanchez should have been charged with a passed ball in the first inning. He didn't get his glove down to snag Volquez's low sinker, and Mark Teixeira scored when the ball skipped to the backstop.
