3 ejected after Pirates, Brewers brawl

Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole was in the center of everything Sunday, including a third-inning brawl.

Cole allowed just one run over a career-high eight innings. The 23-year-old right-hander also played a role in a brawl that led to three ejections, including that of Brewers star Carlo Gomez.

The Pirates' collective frustrations were begging to rise to a boil as they entered the day two games below .500, an area they had not resided in since the middle of April last season. Moreover, the Pirates have struggled against the Brewers this season losing five of their first six games against the Brewers entering Sunday.

In the third inning, Cole had seen enough.

The brawl started when Gomez smashed a Cole offering with two outs in the third inning. Gomez thought he had homered. He admired the shot for a moment and flipped his bat before slowly jogging to first. But the ball smashed high off the center-field wall. Gomez slid into third with a triple.

As Gomez brushed himself off. Cole walked over toward third and barked at him, prompting outrage from Gomez, who walked toward Cole. The bullpens and benches cleared, and the melee spilled into left field.

Gomez had to be restrained from chasing after Cole, who walked back toward the mound after offering Gomez his opinion on on-field decorum.

Pirates outfielder Travis Snider, who wasn't in the starting lineup, walked toward Gomez, and Gomez appeared to try to swing his batting helmet at Snider, though Gomez's arm was restricted by a fellow Brewer. Snider then rushed toward Gomez, flipping him as Gomez awkwardly landed on his neck on the infield dirt. Snider was then grabbed by Brewers second baseman and appeared to be punched in the head by Brewers backup catcher Martin Maldonado.

Gomez, Snider and Brewers coach Jerry Narron were ejected. Maldonado, who injured Jordy Mercer on an aggressive slide Friday, wasn't ejected.
