Riverhounds goalkeeper Trey Mitchell will undergo surgery to repair his injured left shoulder and miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Thursday.

Mitchell, who has six shutouts and allowed just 16 goals in 17 starts this season, dislocated his already-injured shoulder while saving a penalty kick in the Riverhounds' 2-1 win Saturday in St. Louis. He was able to finish the game but had not practiced at all this week before the decision was made to shut him down for the year.

“We're really sorry both for the team and for Trey personally,” coach Dave Brandt said in a statement. “He's had an excellent year in goal for us, and while we're sorry his season needs to end early, we realize at this point that he needs to get the problem in his shoulder fixed and begin to prepare for next season right away.”

The loss of Mitchell makes an already-thin position desperately so with the Riverhounds (7-8-9) in the midst of a playoff push and on a two-game winning streak.

The Riverhounds already lost Keasel Broome for the season because of a wrist injury, ruling out both goalkeepers on the opening-day roster. The only other goalie under contract is Matt Perrella, a 25-year-old signed earlier this month with just four USL starts.

Perrella is likely to start Saturday when the Riverhounds host Bethlehem Steel, his former club, in a battle between two teams near the playoff cut line.

The Riverhounds will seek to add another goalkeeper on a free agent or loan deal. In the short term, their emergency backup could be goalkeeper coach Hunter Gilstrap, who already has been listed among the team's substitutes this season while Broome was on international duty with Barbados.
