'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Ryan Clark must pass his post-concussion tests before being cleared to play or practice, and coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, “We will continue to monitor his progress.”

Clark posted a Twitter message a few hours after being hurt Sunday that he will play against the Giants.

However, Clark doesn't know when he will be reunited at safety with Troy Polamalu. Polamalu (torn calf), who has played only one quarter since the season opener, will sit out a fourth consecutive game Sunday.

Right tackle Marcus Gilbert (knee) will miss his third in a row. Both injuries are significant.

• Running backs Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) andIsaac Redman (ankle) will resume working Wednesday. Jonathan Dwyer, coming off consecutive 100-yard games, has a strained right quadriceps but is expected to practice Thursday. Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley aggravated the right hamstring injury that occurred Oct. 11 in Tennessee, but the injury is not believed to be serious. Backup linebacker Stevenson Sylvester (hamstring) is questionable for the Giants.

• Tomlin didn't detail any plans for rookie nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu, whose two-game suspension resulting from his Oct. 14 run-in with police on the South Side has ended. Tomlin did not say if the Steelers would wait for Ta'amu's case to be adjudicated before deciding if he would be further punished or released. He could be demoted to the practice squad if no other NFL team claims him after a release. “He's got in-house issues,” Tomlin said. “He has legal issues. He has National Football League issues. Such is life.”

Antonio Brown's back-stepping jaunt into the end zone during his penalty-erased, punt-return touchdown Sunday upset Tomlin. Brown was flagged for taunting. “I not only spoke to Antonio, but I spoke to our team about it,” Tomlin said. “Briefly, simply what I said was it was not respectable. Those of us who know Antonio and watch him work on a day-to-day basis, if one word describes him professionally it's respectable. ... I thought it was an awesome learning experience for the entire group.”

• Despite the major damage inflicted upon the New York/New Jersey area by Hurricane Sandy, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., was not affected and the NFL is planning to play the Steelers-Giants game as scheduled at 4:25 p.m. Sunday.
