With Ben Roethlisberger healthy and starting again, the Steelers didn't need a fourth quarterback.
Brian Hoyer, the former backup to Tom Brady in New England, was released Saturday to make room on the 53-man roster for cornerback Josh Victorian. The former Louisiana Tech defensive back has been on the practice squad all season.
The Steelers brought in Hoyer on Nov. 20 after Roethlisberger and backup Byron Leftwich were injured in successive games. Roethlisberger had rib and shoulder-related injuries that caused him to miss 31⁄3 games. Hoyer then served as Charlie Batch's backup for the last two games.
Roethlisberger went through a full practice in advance of the Steelers' game Sunday against the Chargers and Leftwich is also healing, leaving almost no practice snaps for Hoyer.
Batch will be the backup Sunday.
