Former Pitt running back LaRod Stephens-Howling signed a one-year contract Friday with the Steelers.

Stephens-Howling carried 111 times for the Cardinals last season — but only for a 3.2 average — and is likely to be used mostly as a kick returner and occasional third-down back. He has three career kickoff return touchdowns.

“It was a position we needed to bring in competition,” offensive coordinator Todd Haley said.

Stephens-Howling is a former star at Johnstown High. He ran for 1,959 yards at Pitt from 2005-08.
