Steelers guard Ramon Foster suffered a Grade 1 high-ankle sprain during the second half of Sunday's 23-10 win over Buffalo that could keep him out a couple of weeks.

Foster suffered the injury early in the third quarter when Buffalo defensive tackle Kyle Williams fell into the back of Foster's right ankle while tackling Le'Veon Bell.

Foster left the game and did not return. He was wearing a protective boot on his foot after the game.

The timeframe for high- ankle sprains are fluid, said Dr. David Geier, an orthopedic surgeon and director of Medical University of South Carolina sports medicine.

“All high-ankle sprains average about six weeks to return to play,” Geier said. “In theory, milder ones would be two to three weeks. It can be tough to predict. We often change the timelines depending on how an athlete is progressing.”

Grade 1 is the least severe of the ankle sprains and is considered a mild sprain. However, the high-ankle sprain, which is a slight tear of the ligaments between the tibia and fibula, is said to be very painful.

“It makes the rotation of the ankle very painful,” Geier said.

Foster started all nine games for the Steelers this year at left guard.

The Detroit Lions come to Heinz Field on Sunday with two of the better defensive tackles in the league — Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley.
