A Penn Hills woman claims in a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday that the Penn Hills School District violated her civil rights when she was forced to resign from her custodia job because school officials illegally searched her private cell phone and found racial slurs in some of the text messages.

Diane Coglio, 46, is suing the district, the school board, Superintendent Thomas Washington and Business Director Richard Liberto. She says in the lawsuit that she lost her cell phone while working the evening shift on April 27.

Coglio is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. District solicitor Craig Alexander couldn't be reached for comment.
