Lake Arthur good channel catfish waters

» Lake Arthur is known for a lot of things, like its hybrid striped bass in the spring, its largemouth bass all summer and its monster muskies. It's also a good channel catfish water, and that's one of the species that's currently providing lots of action. Anglers fishing in the evening and after dark with chicken livers, stinkbaits and minnows have been getting channel cats in the 20-inch class with some regularity. Bullheads also have been hitting, to the point of being a nuisance to those casting nightcrawlers, according to some reports.
» Anglers fishing Conneaut Lake have been picking up bass, but most have been small, according to a Fish and Boat Commission report. One anglers got a 6.3-pound bass in a recent tournament on the lake, however. The best baits were topwaters early in the day and dropshot rigs later.
» Raccon Lake has been producing some largemouth bass for anglers fishing with topwater lures early and late in the day and with live bait like minnows and nightcrawlers. A few bluegills and a lesser number of crappies also are being caught.
» Fishing pressure has been light at Laurel Hill Lake. Fishermen have been getting a few rock bass where the stream enters the lake and a few largemouth bass in the deeper water of the shore opposite the beach.
» At Woodcock Lake, anglers have been picking up a few walleyes and smallmouth bass.
» The Shenango River has been givng up a lot of northern pike to anglers tossing topwater lures. One 35-inch fish was reportedly caught, too.
» At Glade Run Lake near Butler, fishermen battling the heat and the weeds have been picking up largemouth bass, though mostly short ones, on nightcrawlers, soft baits and topwater lures.
» The Yough River is running low, but fishermen hitting the deep holes between Whitsett and Cedar Creek have been getting some smallmouth bass and an occasional white bass. Minnows and minnow imitations have been the most productive baits.
» At Lake Erie, a few steelhead are said to be entering the tributary mouths at first light, then disappearing again as soon as the sun comes up. One angler said that just one fish was caught Wednesday morning, on a size 14 peach egg fly, but there were no other strikes. Others have been trying the lake at the mouth of Godfrey Run, but catches are said to be slow there, as well.
» In Lake Erie, anglers have been getting some steelhead and good numbers of walleyes fishing in 75 to 100 feet of water in the second trench northwest of Walnut Creek. The perch fishing remains good in 50 to 62 feet of water northwest of Walnut Creek and off the point at Presque Isle.
» Lower Twin Lake is thick with weeds, but anglers fishing Upper Twin have been picking up some sub-legal largemouth bass and panfish.
» Walleye catches have started to pick up slightly at Pymatuning Lake, with most of the fish being taken by drifting nigthcrawlers and jigs in 14 to 22 feet of water. Crappies also are being caught around deep brush pile, and a few muskies up to 39 inches have been reported.
» Anglers fishing the Allegheny River near Oil City have been getting a lot of smallmouth bass, some northern pike and a few walleyes, mostly on live chubs, Dingers, Trigger X soft baits and Rapala Shad Raps.
» The carp fishing has slowed at Northmoreland Lake, as thick weeds have made getting to fish difficult.
