Gill likely to miss Canes game

Penguins defenseman Hal Gill did not practice Wednesday and will most likely sit out tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes because of an undisclosed injury. "We're not quite sure if he's not going to be there," Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. "It looks like that, but we'll see more (today)." Therrien said defenseman Darryl Sydor will fill in for Gill if he is not available.

• Penguins left wing Matt Cooke returned to practice yesterday for the first time in a week. Bruised ribs forced him to miss three consecutive games. He hasn't practiced or played since Oct. 14 against Philadelphia.

• Penguins center Sidney Crosby has been battling a sinus infection since Saturday. The sickness doesn't seem to have gotten to him; he scored five points in the last two games. "It is what it is, I guess," Crosby said. "I hope it goes away soon."

• Penguins center Jordan Staal will go up against his brother, Eric, when the Penguins host the Hurricanes tonight. But Jordan hasn't given his teammates any tips on how to defend his older brother. In 15 career games against the Penguins, Eric has recorded eight goals and 10 assists. "I'm sure they know each other pretty well, but most teams are pretty much focused on their team, not individual guys," Crosby said.

7 Power-play points Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has recorded this season, which ranks No. 1 in the NHL.

9 Assists Malkin has this season, third in the league.
