Fleury, Sabourin take on different masks

Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008

Goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury and Dany Sabourin will wear special masks with the Penguins' alternate uniforms. The Penguins will wear those uniforms - a light blue, dark blue and white design they also wore at the 2008 NHL Winter Classic - against the Buffalo Sabres tonight at Mellon Arena. Fleury's mask is the one he intended to wear at the Classic; he was injured a few weeks before the game and did not dress. Much of his mask is yellow - intentionally, as he was still sporting yellow leg pads, catching glove and a blocker when he commissioned its design early last season.

• Coach Michel Therrien made practice Friday optional, but the majority of players participated in an hour-long session at Mellon Arena. Notably not participating were center Evgeni Malkin and right wing Petr Sykora.

• Eight of the Penguins' 16 games have extended beyond regulation. They have earned 14 of 16 possible points in those contests. They lost third-period leads in three of those games and blew a 3-0 lead in the third period of an overtime win Thursday against Philadelphia. The Penguins played only 16 games last season that extended beyond regulation.

· LW Paul Bissonnette was placed on waivers after practice. He had appeared in only six games and was scratched in six of the past seven.
