Cooke avoids ejection issue

Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008

LW Matt Cooke did not make himself available after the game Saturday to discuss his early first-period ejection against Vancouver. Cooke was assessed a game misconduct penalty to go along with his fighting major only 25 seconds into the game. D Brooks Orpik was also hit with a fighting major and RW Tyler Kennedy was assessed a double-minor roughing foul. Vancouver RW Jannik Hansen also was ejected with a game misconduct and drew a fighting major. LW Alex Burrows (fighting major, roughing minor) and C Ryan Kesler were also penalized for the Canucks.

* G Dany Sabourin, who started a third consecutive game in place of Marc-Andre Fleury (undisclosed injury), said he was distressed to see his former Vancouver teammate Roberto Luongo leave the game early in the first period with an injured groin. Luongo departed at 4:54 of the first period and needed to be helped by teammates to the dressing room.

"It was kind of weird, he had nobody around... I don't know what happened, but I feel bad for him," Sabourin said of Luongo, whom he backed up in 2006-07.

* Coach Michel Therrien on the Penguins' underperforming power play (0 for 4 yesterday, 17 for 93 overall): "You can't be tick-tack-toe all the time. There are times you have to battle... most of the time, we lose those battles." Therrien suggested a change in personnel on the power-play units was likely. He said the current group "doesn't work."
