'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

» Right-hander Kevin Correia (strained left oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list Monday. The move was retroactive to Aug. 20. There was no immediate indication from management who will take Correia's spot in the starting rotation. Left-hander Aaron Thompson is scheduled to start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, which would've been Correia's next turn. Righty Sean Gallagher, who's supposed to pitch Tuesday for Indy, also might be a candidate.

» Righty reliever Chris Leroux was activated off the DL. Leroux had been out since July 28 due to a strained calf. He made six appearances during a rehab assignment with Indy.

» Left-hander Paul Maholm (strained shoulder) was examined yesterday by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews. "I don't think there was anything we did not expect to see or any surprises," manager Clint Hurdle said, without elaborating. Maholm was not available for comment, but he did send this upbeat Twitter message: "Good visit with Dr. Andrews. Looks like a strained muscle. Rest and let it heal. Should be good." Before flying back to Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon, Maholm held and impromptu Q&A session with fans via Twitter. His only stipulation: "No injury questions."

» Ross Ohlendorf will fill Maholm's rotation spot, beginning with the game today against Milwaukee. It will be his first start in the majors since April 8. The righty was on the DL with a shoulder injury, then was optioned to Indy. "It's been a long 4 12 months," Ohlendorf said. "Each game during my rehab, something went a little bit better. I feel fine. My changeup and slider are much more consistent than they were in spring training. All my pitches are good."

» Righty reliever Evan Meek (shoulder tendinitis) threw 17 pitches, including 15 fastballs, on Sunday in his one-inning rehab outing with High-A Bradenton. Meek's fastball velocity ranged from 88-92 mph. "It was a good first step, and that's it," Hurdle said. "There's nothing more to read into it."

» Reliever Tony Watson didn't get the ball Saturday after winning his first game in the majors; first baseman Garrett Jones tossed it into the crowd at the end of the game. Watson still wound up with a sort of semi-official memento, though. Equipment manager Scott Bones gave him three balls that were used in the game. "It's not 'the' ball, but it's close enough," Watson said. "It's all good." Some of Watson's teammates sent tweets asking if anyone had the ball Jones tossed, but there was no response.

» The Reds-Pirates game Saturday, which was televised by Fox, drew a 7.2 rating in the Pittsburgh market, according to Nielson Market Research. It was the second-highest single-game rating in the local market in the 15-year history of Saturday Baseball on Fox. The game drew a 17 share, meaning 17 percent of televisions in Pittsburgh that were on during the game were tuned to the Pirates.
