NASHVILLE – The Pirates on Tuesday found their backup corner infielder by reaching an agreement with Chris Gomez on a one-year, $1 million contract.

The deal will be finalized once Gomez, 36, passes a physical.

"I don't foresee any problems," Alan Mearsand, Gomez's agent, said. "Everything else is set."

Gomez played last season for the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians and batted a combined .297 with one home run and 21 RBI. He appeared in 44 games at first base, 31 at third and 10 at second.

A 15-year veteran, Gomez has a career batting average of .261. He began last season with the Orioles, then was claimed off waivers Aug. 9 by the Indians.
