More space allows New Kensington Arts Center to offer creative classes
A network of artists affiliated with the New Kensington Arts Center is enjoying a bigger space and offering numerous art classes and workshops for May and June.
The arts center moved into the former Career Training Academy on Fifth Avenue in January. The building offers at least 20 rooms on two floors for workshops and classes.
“I love having this art center opening in the city,” says Cindy Downard, a freelance graphic designer who assists the center with memberships, marketing and advertising. “I think it is a great step forward. It's given me motivation to get back into my drawing and painting.”
Bill Hall, an amateur photo-grapher and treasurer for the arts center, encourages art enthusiasts to check out all of the class offerings.
“We are always looking for new media and ideas,” he says. “There is so much talent in the Alle-Kiski Valley area, and we are getting a lot of new artists taking interest. We are trying to get the word out to everyone so they have the opportunity to show their work.”
A wood-carving class taught by Rich Waltz is new to the lineup of classes.
“Things move pretty fast around here,” Hall says. “We are also working on a writing club that will be on par with the New Kensington Camera Club, the Allegheny Valley Art League (Draw, Paint and Scratch), and the wood carvers club. We expect more clubs to be a part of the arts center, we just don't know who will be next.”
