The reality is, you can find pants that fit
Finding the best-fitting jeans and pants may be as easy as a 10-second body scan.
A new machine available at The Mall at Robinson calculates your size via radio waves that hit 200,000 points on your body. The Me-Ality, which stands for measured reality, then gives you trouser options from size to color to cut from specific brands that it has contracts with.
“We are so excited to give shoppers the opportunity to preview the fitting room of the future at The Mall at Robinson,” says Tanya Shaw, president and CEO of Me-Ality. “Right now, we are in the preview phase of our launch, which means we're able to match people with a range of denim and pants styles. We'll be expanding to cover all clothing in the very near future.”
In the Pittsburgh area, the Me-Ality is available at The Mall at Robinson, Monroeville Mall and Westmoreland Mall. There is no charge to try the machines, which are outside the food court area on the upper level. Me-Ality was installed at the end of May.
To use the Me-Ality, participants step inside and stand still for just a few seconds. It is best to wear flat shoes or none and no big jewelry or sunglasses. When participants are finished, they receive a printout with clothing and style suggestions. An arrow indicates which clothes are the better fit.
It lists details such as brand or store, dark or light wash, boot or skinny cut, low to mid-rise and price. The company will email you new choices as it adds new vendors.
“The thing with clothing, jeans and pants included, is there is no standard sizing, not even in the same store with the same brand,” says Shema Krinsky, marketing director of the Mall at Robinson. “Because there is no sizing standard for clothing manufacturers, shoppers typically purchase different sizes, depending on the brand.”
So, Me-Ality works with stores to figure out the sizing and creates sizing statistics based on that research, she says.
“Fitting-room frustrations end with this machine, because it offers a revolutionary new technology, which enables customers to find their best fit,” Krinsky says.
Me-Ality, which is owned by Unique Solutions Design Ltd., based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, works for men and women of all ages and sizes.
“I am sure you will see it in other malls in the area in the future,” Krinsky says.
On Wednesday, 25 people came by during the lunch hour. If the line is long, you can make an appointment and come back later.
Christine Bae, 15, of Stuebenville, Ohio, who is from Korea and attending school in the United States, was with her host family.
“It was a little hard to hold in laughing,” she says. “But I am glad I did it. I have never bought jeans in America, so now I have some idea of where to look and which jeans to buy.”
Danielle Starcher, 30, of Beaver, Beaver County, was shy about trying it. She says she often had a tough time finding jeans even before she had her son, Santino, nine months ago. But after her Me-Ality experience, she was sold. It sent her to Aeropostale, where she doesn't usually shop, and she tried on the recommended pair.
“They fit perfectly,” she says. “These fit better than any other jean I have had before. I am definitely going to buy these, and maybe two pair.”
Josh McCoy, 24, of Morgantown, W.Va., says he has had a tough time buying jeans. He tried the device and says he's impressed with the choices. He has purchased jeans at Banana Republic, but hadn't been to Eddie Bauer.
“I am going to try on the jeans they recommend at Eddie Bauer,” he says. “I also have never worn Levi's, but I am going to try them on now, too. This is pretty cool in that it gives you so much information.”
