Greensburg Art Center opens exhibition, plans ‘GIFTing’ event
The Greensburg Art Center is wrapping up one program and gearing up for the busy holiday season with another .
Latrobe artist Rachel Wheeler is the final exhibitor in this year’s “Picture This at the Library,” a joint venture between the art center and the Greensburg-Hempfield Library, 237 S. Pennsylvania Ave.
A reception, free and open to the public, is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the library. The exhibit continues through Nov. 26.
“This is my second solo exhibit. My first was at the Greensburg Art Center in May,” Wheeler says.
A graduate of Saint Vincent College, she works as a professional artist. According to her website, her achievements also include acceptance into the Mister Fred Rogers Fine Arts Juried Exhibition in 2018. Her artistic creations include pets, families, children and scenery.
“My (library) exhibit mainly focuses on portraiture and nature, floral and landscape,” Wheeler says.
As the days grow shorter, she hopes the 26 pieces on display brighten up the library space. The majority will be available for purchase, she adds.
“Since every artist has a specific style, (exhibit planners) usually leave it up to the artist to put great compositions of art together. The artist knows their work and what will work together,” Wheeler says. “I think it’s a great way to reach a new audience,” she says of the exhibit’s location in the library.
“When I was in there setting up, I realized how busy it is. … There were a lot of people in there, spending a long period of time in there,” Wheeler says.
Her exhibit includes colorful pieces at eye level and above, close to the circulation desk and front pillars. “You are greeted with art when you walk in,” she says.

GIFTing event greets early shoppers

Those whose loved ones are artistic, or who enjoy receiving works of arts as gifts, can select from jewelry, ceramics, glass, textiles, paintings, mixed media and more.
A kick-off opening reception, free to the public, will be held at the Greensburg Art Center, 230 Todd School Road, from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 9. The sale runs until Dec. 20.
Additionally, “A Christmas Carol” creations contest is running in the art center classroom, featuring holiday-themed paintings available for purchase.
Items must be ready for exhibition by Oct. 21.
