PennDOT announces major Parkway East closure
Motorists who travel the Parkway East are in for major traffic tangles just after Christmas.
PennDOT this morning announced a five-day closure of the Parkway East inbound lanes from Dec. 26-30.
The road will shut down at 6 a.m. Dec. 26 on the city side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel between the Boulevard of the Allies and Grant Street. It will reopen at 11 a.m. Dec. 30, two hours before the Steelers game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Work will include road reconstruction between the Allegheny County Jail and the Grant Street interchange, spokesman Steve Cowan said.
They also will be replacing bridge dams in two locations, one on the structure in front of the jail and one near the Birmingham Bridge.
Cowan said crews also may patch concrete in the “bathtub” area.
PennDOT officials said they chose the holiday week because traffic is typically lighter and also said the week-long closure will save what would amount to five weekends of shutdowns.
Drivers will be detoured along the Boulevard of the Allies to 7th Avenue, and then to Grant Street back to the parkway.
