National Pickleball champion giving lessons at Lauri Ann West Community Center
The 2017 USA Pickleball champion is coming to O'Hara this weekend for clinics and semi-private lessons.
Tyson McGuffin, 28, is the current men's singles National Champion, winning the men's singles open division of the 2017 USA Pickleball Association National Championships at Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort in Casa Grande, AZ.
His visit to O'Hara begins with a dinner from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lauri Ann West Community Center along Powers Run Road and he'll split his time through Sunday between the center and the Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena in Indiana Township.
“A fast-growing sport enjoyed by so many in our community, Pickleball has created a positive buzz throughout the center,” Director Keith Fenton said. “We are very excited to host Tyson McGuffin's visit to Pittsburgh.”
McGuffin, a former competitive tennis player, currently competes in singles and doubles events sanctioned by the USA Pickleball Association, the sport's governing body.
He grew up in Lake Chelan, Washington, in a family that was largely into wrestling. He took up competitive tennis at the junior college level after passing up on a wrestling scholarship, then was introduced to Pickleball at a local YMCA before turning professional two years later.
