Aspinwall VFD celebrates 125 years, invites community to Fire Fest
On Sept. 28, the Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department marks a milestone of 125 years of volunteer service to the residents of the Borough of Aspinwall and the surrounding communities. The department’s mission of saving lives and preserving property has expanded over the last century and a quarter to include response to vehicle accidents, medical quick response, hazardous materials incidents, natural disasters, acts of terrorism and technical rescues.
On Sept. 15, all are welcome to Fire Fest, from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Aspinwall Recreational Field as the department celebrates 125 years of unbroken service to its beloved borough. There will be a parade beginning at 1:30 p.m. and food, drink, games and music at the field.
At its height in the 1970s, the Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department boasted a membership roster of 120 volunteers in two fire companies. Today, the department performs its mission with 40 highly-trained men and women of all ages. The department welcomes new members to carry on the tradition of the fire service. The fire department also has a vibrant junior firefighter program for young, civic-minded men and women ages 15 to 17.
