Gateway officials look to hire new principal

Gateway School District hopes to hire a new high school principal by next month, according to Superintendent Bill Short.

Pete Murphy resigned in late May to take a principal position at Thomas Jefferson High School. He was hired June 6, and will earn a salary of $118,500.

Murphy, 46, of Peters Township began his career as a teacher and assistant principal in the New Brighton Area School District. He received his undergraduate degree from Edinboro University and principal's certification from the University of Pittsburgh.

He was hired as the assistant principal at Gateway High School in 2007 and has worked as the high school principal for the last four years.

Short said the district sent emails internally to begin the search for candidates to fill the spot in mid-June. He said two district employees have expressed interest in the job so far.

The position was posted to the district's website June 28, and will stay posted for seven days, Short said.

“Then we'll have a special meeting in July to hire someone,” he said.

According to the posting, the deadline to apply is July 9.

Requirements for the job include a master's degree or higher, knowledge in the areas of school law, curriculum and staff expertise and at least three years' experience in teaching and school administration.
