Gateway students dubbed 'Super Star Readers'
Several University Park Elementary School students were dubbed Super Star Readers after the third annual Reach for the Stars reading challenge at the school in Gateway School District.
The program, which ran for two weeks in May, challenged students in kindergarten through fourth grade to read, or be read to, for 300 minutes. Those who read 1,000 minutes, or for kindergarten and first grade, 600 minutes, achieved Super Star Reader status.
Students in the program run by Usborne Books & More, part of Educational Development Corp., also were asked to collect pledges and raised $1,400 this year, 75 percent of which went back to them to select new books. The rest went to their classrooms, and the company also donated $140 for new books at the school’s library.
