Company specializing in head lice treatment opens first local clinic in North Hills
Whether a child is heading to summer camp, a sleep over with friends or simply has a habit of sharing things such as hats and hair brushes, the thought that their itchy scalp might be something more than the eye can see is cause for some parents to bug out.
Each year, more than 12 million cases of head lice are reported in the United States, according the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
And trying to get rid of them with the variety of over-the-counter medications available can have mixed results, according to a 2016 review of three decades' worth of medical literature on the subject led by a dermatologist with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
While lice are contagious, there is no risk of serious infections being spread, medical experts say. But getting rid of the tiny, pesky critters can be frustrating.
To help address the problem, a nationwide company specializing in the treatment of lice has opened its first location in Western Pennsylvania.
Utah-based Lice Clinics of America recently opened a clinic in Pine Township at 1000 Stonewood Drive, Suite 320. The company also has clinics in Harrisburg and Philadelphia.
