Penn Hills, Riverview choirs will join Pittsburgh Concert Chorale for ‘Pittsburgh Sings!’

For the eighth year in a row, the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale will be joined by local high school choirs for “Pittsburgh Sings!”

This year’s concert, on Sunday, Oct. 27, will feature choirs from the Penn Hills and Riverview school districts.

“‘Pittsburgh Sings’ is always a special afternoon of music,” said Pittsburgh Concert Chorale Music Director Susan Medley. “In eight years, more than 1,000 student singers have been featured on the stage of Carnegie Music Hall through this event.”

The annual concert was modeled after the Carnegie Hall High School Choral Festival, which Medley created during her time as Carnegie Hall’s associate education director in New York.

Penn Hills High School chorus teacher Kala Williams took her students five years ago, and a brand-new group will return this year.

“It was really great to be doing work with a choir from another high school and with the concert chorale,” Williams said. “The kids sort of get a taste of what it’s like to be at the next level.”

Each choir will perform individually before joining with the PCC to perform selections from Carl Orff’s “Carmina burana” as a finale, including the powerful “O fortuna.”

“I felt so much pride for them, for the work they put in to learn it,” Williams said. “They’ve probably not had much experience with classical music and big pieces, so to experience that onstage is a very proud teacher moment.”

Medley agreed.

“The spirit of collaboration in making music together creates a bond between the choirs that is obvious to the audience,” Medley said.

There is no cost to attend, however a free-will offering will be used to help fund a scholarship for one student participant.

“Pittsburgh Sings! Pittsburgh Concert Chorale’s Festival of Choirs” will be the first concert of the chorale’s 2019-20 season. It will be at 4 p.m., Oct. 27 at Carnegie Music Hall, 4000 Forbes Avenue in the city’s Oakland neighborhood.
