Former Macy’s Waterfront store to house 2 new tenants
Less than a year after Macy’s at the Waterfront in Homestead announced it was closing, two tenants are ready to move into the building.
Siemens Mobility, Inc., a technology-based company, and Commonwealth Charter Academy, a cyberschool, have signed long-term leases to occupy the 135,000-square-foot space that has sat vacant since last March.
Siemens Mobility, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, will operate an engineering and research and development hub for rail infrastructure on the second floor of the building. The company will occupy 56,165 square feet of the space for at least 10 years.

The new space will hold 200 Siemens employees, coming from their current Linden Avenue research and development facility in East Pittsburgh, and engineering, research and development staff and executives from their Munhall facility. Manufacturing operations will remain at the Munhall facility.
Siemens officials announced in 2014 the opening of their Munhall location. The decision more than doubled its workforce by adding 68 engineering jobs and 61 manufacturing jobs. The company invested $1 million into the site, which supports a project to upgrade train control systems on the two largest rail lines in the United States for the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority, the company said at the time.
Commonwealth Charter Academy will occupy 64,197 square feet of the first floor with administrative offices and production labs. The school’s hub in the Pittsburgh region is currently located in Seven Fields, Butler County.
Commonwealth Charter has locations across the state, including Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Johnstown and Scranton.
Officials were not available Friday to comment on the Waterfront location.
“Both tenants desired a large floor plan to fit their operations on one floor as well as a central location with a host of accessible amenities,” Marty Sweeney, senior vice president of M&J Wilkow, The Waterfront’s Managing Partner, said in a news release.
“As a destination center, The Waterfront has a lot to offer business tenants – multiple restaurants, entertainment and retail options, three hotels, beautiful apartment living, a full-service fitness center, and a river trail for biking, jogging or walking,” he said. “This multifaceted business ecosystem is exactly what employers and employees are seeking.”
Over 500 people will work in the former Macy’s space. Construction has started on the inside of the building, said Emily Wittmer, marketing director for The Waterfront, but a move in date has not yet been set.
Macy’s was located at the West Bridge Street location for 15 years, employing 66 people. The decision to close the store came after Macy’s closed its flagship downtown Pittsburgh store in 2015.
The Waterfront and M&J Wilkow purchased the property in 2018 in an effort to expand the area’s retailers and tenants.
The building will open at 90% capacity. Officials are searching for a tenant to occupy 13,000-square-feet on the second floor. Those interested can contact Sweeney at [email protected]
