Kennywood reopens ‘Steel Curtain’ after hours-long outage, warns of more potential delays

Kennywood’s newest, Steelers-themed roller coaster closed down for several hours Wednesday, marking at least the third time the popular attraction has shut down since its debut last month.

After having been shut down for the weekend, Kennywood officials said Tuesday morning that they don’t know when the Steel Curtain would reopen.

“Maintenance crews, working with our partners at S&S Worldwide (the coaster’s designers), are continuing work on some adjustments to the ride,” the park said on its Facebook page. “Being a unique prototype ride, it’s not unusual to have periodic downtime as we have seen over The Steel Curtain’s first month of operations.

“While our team is making progress to get Steel Curtain back open as soon as possible, it will be hard to pinpoint exactly when the ride will reopen as it is a fluid situation.”

Then, shortly after 5:30 p.m., Kennywood posted via Twitter and Instagram that the ride had reopened.

The coaster was closed during the weekend, and remained closed Monday. The park apologized for the inconvenience.

The Steel Curtain also was out of service for part of its opening day on July 13.

The park warned there could be more stoppages and closures, which it said is normal for any amusement ride, “especially so given the newness, complexity and record-breaking nature of The Steel Curtain.”

The coaster features nine inversions, including the world’s tallest at 197 feet high, and tops out at 75 mph. It is the tallest roller coaster in the state, standing at 220 feet with a 205-foot drop.

“Please know that our primary focus throughout this process is on the safety of the ride for you, our guests,” the park said in its message. “We aim to provide the best experience possible on a visit to Kennywood, and safety is the first priority in creating that good experience.”
