Wigle Whiskey opens bar, restaurant at Pittsburgh International Airport
Airlines no longer are the only ones offering flights at Pittsburgh International Airport.
Travelers now can get a Wigle Whiskey flight before taking off.
The Strip District-based distillery’s Tasting Room, Bar and Restaurant debuts Wednesday in Concourse A.
Open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., the space has seating for 56 patrons, who can sip signature cocktails, cider, mead and local beer while overlooking the tarmac. In addition to spirits, there’s a full food menu available.
Since the airport’s busiest time of day is between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., Wigle puts a special emphasis on breakfast offerings. Until 10 a.m., early birds can enjoy a traditional morning meal of two eggs, baby potato hash, choice of ham, bacon or bratwurst and toast, a ham-and-Swiss omelet, Greek yogurt with granola and fresh berries or a Belgian waffle topped with bourbon-spiked maple syrup.
Other elevated pub grub includes appetizers such as boneless wings in a bourbon barbecue sauce, salads, flatbreads, sandwiches, Atlantic salmon and baked mac-and-cheese entrees and funnel cake fries for dessert.
While patrons can’t buy full bottles of booze on-site – a pop-up shop in the airport terminal will eventually open for that purpose – they can order flights and full pours of Wigle spirits, including a variety of whiskies, gin, absinthe and rum. There also are specialty cocktails such as the “Monhattan,” a Pittsburgh take on the classic drink, and the Luv U A Latte made with coffee liqueur, gin, coconut milk, and rosemary lavender bitters.
“We’re excited to add another premier Pittsburgh brand to the airport,” says Eric Sprys, chief commercial officers for the Allegheny County Airport Authority. “Wigle Whiskey has quickly established themselves as an award-winning distillery with fans around the world. Their addition to our concessions portfolio further strengthens that authentic sense of place travelers are looking for when they come to Pittsburgh International Airport.”
Other Pittsburgh institutions with an airport presence include Primanti Brothers and Penn Brewery. The emphasis on local products is part of the airport’s Terminal Modernization Program. The construction of the new terminal is expected to add nearly 11,000 direct and indirect jobs to the region and generate approximately $1.66 billion in economic activity. Ground will be broken by the end of the year and it will open by 2023.
Meredith Meyer Grelli, Wigle co-owner, says she always had the airport in mind when she was lobbying to change Pennsylvania liquor laws to allow distilleries in the state to operate up to five satellite sales locations. The law changed in 2016.
Wigle Whiskey now has tasting rooms at the Omni William Penn Hotel Downtown and at Ross Park Mall and owns the Barrelhouse & Whiskey Garden and Threadbare Cider & Mead, both on the North Side.
