eBay scammer rips off Lawrence County man shopping for SUV, police say
A Lawrence County man got taken in an eBay scam, according to state police.
State police said a man in New Beaver thought he was buying a 2004 Chevy Tahoe from a seller on eBay on Nov. 5.
The seller asked for payment through eBay gift cards, which are untraceable, state police said. The victim sent a total of $3,500 — $2,000 for the SUV and $1,500 for shipping.
State police said in a news release issued Friday that the man discovered the seller’s account was fake after he paid for the vehicle.
The victim received a bogus confirmation email with a 12-digit code, according to police. When he contacted eBay about it, police said he was told the company’s codes are only six numbers long.
The seller’s account then disappeared.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact state police at 724-662-6162.
