Allegheny County libraries look for love from donors during monthlong fundraiser
Alle-Kiski Valley libraries within the Allegheny County Library Association are set to receive some extra funding, but how much will depend on how much you love your library.
The Pittsburgh-based Jack Buncher Foundation has pledged to match donations up to $500 per donor, per library through a campaign dubbed Love Your Library.
In its second year, the campaign lasts through Sept. 30.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Jack Buncher Foundation, all participating Allegheny County libraries will receive a pro-rated portion of a $150,000 match pool to support their general operations,” the campaign website says.
Last year, the campaign raised more than $650,000, library association Executive Director Marilyn Jenkins said. Association libraries raised $535,000 and the Buncher Foundation matched $125,000.
“We're hoping to top that this year,” Jenkins said.
Local library directors said the campaign is beneficial because the funds raised go toward each individual library. It also provides libraries with more publicity.
The Alle-Kiski Valley libraries that are part of the association are:
• Community Library of Allegheny Valley, which has branches in Tarentum and Harrison
• Springdale Free Public Library
• Oakmont Carnegie Library
• Plum Borough Community Library
The Springdale and Oakmont libraries plan to put their campaign funds into their operating budgets, which pay for things such as books, materials and programs, their directors said.
Oakmont library director Beth Mellor said the funds will help her library do more throughout the year.
“It helps us really enhance what the community wants,” Mellor said.
The ACLA is a federated library system of 45 public libraries, plus the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and its 19 locations. While each library has its own board of directors, through the ACLA they're able to coordinate the sharing of resources such as downloadable books, audio and video offerings, catalogs and online databases.
