Common appointed to Springdale Township commissioners
Springdale Township officials have appointed Charles Common to fill the commissioners' seat left vacant after James Biery resigned last month.
Commissioners held a special meeting Wednesday to conduct interviews and make the appointment. They appointed Common with a 3-1 vote.
He will serve the year and a half left of Biery's term.
Three residents submitted letters of interest: Common, Terrence Parker and Mariana Burns.
Each candidate got three minutes to speak about why he or she wanted to serve on the board.
Commissioners had the chance to ask questions during the interviews. Although few were posed, commissioners did ask how long each candidate had lived in the township and if they had attended meetings in the past.
Common, 48, said he looks forward to working with the board to make the township more family-friendly and improve the public parks. He will serve as the parks and recreation chairman on the board. Although he wasn't able to attend township meetings in the past because of his work schedule, he now has the availability to attend. He currently works in the shipping department of a warehouse and part time as a restaurant cook.
"I'm not afraid to work hard," Common said.
Commissioner Henrietta James voted against Common's appointment because she had nominated Burns.
James said she nominated her because of her active participation at township meetings.
Board President Anthony Rozzano said he voted for Common because of his interest in improving the parks.
The board has been discussing making improvements to Williams Street Park and hopes to get started this summer.
Township Solicitor Steve Yakopec said Common will be sworn in between now and the June meeting.
