Allegheny Valley Hospital workers give OK for strike authorization

Allegheny Valley Hospital nurses, nurses aides and service workers voted Thursday to authorize a strike if needed, according to a text message from SEIU and Linda Thrower, chapter president of the union at the hospital.

The union’s bargaining committee was authorized to “give hospital management a strike notice if needed,” according to the statement.

The statement also said the committee will continue negotiating with hospital management on Aug. 22.

“We plan to work hard to reach an agreement that ensures that we can continue to provide high quality care to our patients,” the statement said.

The union represents about 600 employees at the Harrison hospital, part of the Allegheny Health Network. The union’s current one-year contract with the hospital expires on Aug. 24. Negotiations have been ongoing since May.

Both union and hospital officials say they are confident a new deal can be reached without a strike.
