Tarentum band shell to be dedicated to former Mayor Carl Magnetta
Tarentum will honor late former mayor Carl J. Magnetta Jr. this month.
A “special day of celebration” is planned for Sept. 23, when the band shell at Riverview Memorial Park will be dedicated to Magnetta, borough council President Erika Josefoski said .
Naming the band shell for Magnetta made sense, Josefoski said.
“Carl was heavily involved with the parks and recreation committee and attended all the concerts in the park,” she said. “He devoted a lot of his time to ‘parks and rec,’ so it seemed like a natural choice.”
The event will run from noon to 4 p.m.
“The afternoon will be full of family fun, great food, music, giveaways, and some fun surprises,” Josefoski said. “Bring your family, tell your friends, and come celebrate with us!”
Magnetta, 79, died July 1. A Tarentum native, he had been in public office in the borough for 30 years, first on council beginning in 1964 and later as mayor, most recently from 2009 to the end of last year .
Magnetta’s wife, Barbara, called the dedication “wonderful.” She said her husband loved the concerts in the park.
“Carl was a dedicated representative of this borough for years. He represented our borough well,” she said. “He did a lot of good for people. He’s getting the respect he deserved. He was a good man.”
