Prantl's buys Greensburg bakery, announces holiday ordering

The new Prantl's Bakery location at 612 Grove St. in Greensburg won't be open to walk-in customers until next year, but in December it will accept prepaid pickup orders in time for the holidays.

Prantl's also announced it has acquired Jeff Pastor's Special Order Bakery, which has been making desserts in Greensburg for more than 20 years.

Pastor will continue to bake for Prantl's, according to bakery officials.

The 11,000-square-foot Grove Street facility started operations last month, but it hasn't been open to the public. Instead, it has been producing baked goods to fulfill online orders and supplement the supply at existing stores in Shadyside and in Market Square.

The Pittsburgh locations have run out of capacity to meet rising demand, owner John Felice of Hempfield said in September.

The Grove street building is the former home of Anderson's Market, a historic neighborhood grocery that operated for a century, until 2005.

It will be a while before customers will be able to walk in and make their orders, but until Dec. 10 the bakery is accepting online orders for a limited selection of some of its most popular products, including the burnt almond torte the Huffington Post called “ the greatest cake America ever made .”

Orders must be made and paid for online at prantlsbakery.com .

They may be picked up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, Dec. 1 through Dec. 23.
