Laurel Highlands DUI Task Force plans checkpoints, patrols
Members of the Laurel Highlands DUI Task Force will be looking for intoxicated drivers this weekend in Westmoreland County.
There will be a stationary sobriety checkpoint and roving patrols on Friday and Saturday, according to a news release. Authorities did not say where the enforcement will be taking place.
Police encouraged drivers to drink responsibly and know how prescription medication could affect driving ability.
The following police departments participate in the task force: Derry Borough, Jeannette, Latrobe, Mt. Pleasant, Ligonier Valley, Scottdale, Seward, Southwest Greensburg and St. Clair Township.
A 1990 U.S. Supreme Court ruling held that police have to announce checkpoints ahead of time to meet a minimal standard of consent — if drivers know there’s a checkpoint and still drive, they’re effectively acknowledging that they could run into the checkpoint and be stopped.
