New Aldi store near Mt. Pleasant opening Jan. 17
German discount grocery chain Aldi will expand its Westmoreland County footprint this month with the grand opening of a store in East Huntingdon near Mt. Pleasant.
The store, at 100 Crossroads Plaza on the site of the former Mt. Pleasant Kmart, will hold a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 17. The ceremony will be followed by a Golden Ticket giveaway offering gift cards to the first 100 customers. Shoppers also can enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of Aldi produce.
The East Huntingdon store will be the sixth Aldi store in Westmoreland County. With 12,000 square feet of retail space, the store will create about 15 jobs.
The new location is part of a $3.4 billion investment to expand to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022, the company said. Aldi has more than 1,800 stores in 35 states.
“We’re thrilled to welcome even more of the Mt. Pleasant community to experience what makes Aldi one of the fastest-growing retailers in the U.S.,” said J.R. Perry, Saxonburg division vice president for Aldi.
The new store features open ceilings, natural lighting and additional refrigeration space for more produce, dairy and meat, the company said. Aldi is expanding its product selection by 20 percent over last year, including a 40 percent increase in fresh food selections, the company said.
Mt. Pleasant shoppers can look for new Aldi private-label products, including kombucha, veggie noodles, organic meats, kale and quinoa crunch burgers, and gluten-free bagels, Perry said.
Aldi recently reopened stores in North Huntingdon, Hempfield and Unity townships following extensive remodeling projects — part of a $54 million investment that Aldi is making into 36 stores in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
