1 arrested, 1 sought in daylight robbery of woman in Arnold
ARNOLD — A New Kensington man was arrested and another suspect remained at large after the strong-arm robbery of a woman on Thursday.
Devante Darcell Broaden, 19, of the 1400 block of Alcoa Drive, New Kensington, was arrested about 15 minutes after the 1:30 p.m. robbery.
A night court judge arraigned Broaden and sent him to the Westmoreland County jail on Friday in lieu of $25,000 bond pending a hearing for robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and possessing cocaine.
Police Chief Willie Weber said Broaden and another suspect encountered the woman at a convenience store along Constitution Boulevard.
The New Kensington woman had just cashed a check.
Police said the men asked the 45-year-old woman to give them a ride to New Kensington. She agreed because she knew one of them is acquainted with her daughter, police said.
About two blocks away, one of the men feigned losing his cell phone in the backseat. He asked the driver to stop near Proctor Alley.
While Broaden sat in the front passenger seat, police allege, the other man — who wore a blue T-shirt, brown cargo shorts and bright blue shoes — pretended to look for his phone.
The man opened the rear door, got out and looked under the seat.
“Then he got up, walked to the driver's window, reached in and grabbed her purse,” Weber said.
The woman briefly struggled with the man until the purse strap broke and the man fled.
Weber said the other man, who police believe was Broaden, “just got out of the car and walked away,” Weber said.
The men are shown in store surveillance photos.
Police circulated descriptions of the man and New Kensington officers saw Broaden on the steps of a residence along the 1300 block of Fifth Avenue in New Kensington. He was arrested without incident.
The purse was found behind a church at Leishman Street near the 1500 block of McCandless Street.
The woman's red wallet was found in the alley; all of the money was gone.
