Fox Chapel's McCormick named best player in the state

| Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004

Fox Chapel senior soccer player E.J. McCormick has no scholarship offers. That could change in a hurry.

McCormick has been named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's boys high school player of the year in Pennsylvania, according to Fox Chapel head coach Mark Perry.

McCormick also is one of 55 players who have earned All-America recognition from the NSCAA, Perry said.

The official announcement for both honors was to be made Wednesday.

This season, McCormick recorded 33 goals and nine assists and led Fox Chapel to the WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA semifinals.

He will be honored during the NSCAA's national convention Jan. 12-15 in Baltimore.

"There are a lot of great players in the state," said McCormick, 18, of Dorseyville, Indiana Township. "I was pretty shocked at first. I gave it my best, and I guess it paid off."

McCormick joins Peter Daigle as the only boys players in Fox Chapel history to win the state player of the year award.

He also is one of three Fox Chapel players to be named All-American. The others were Thomas Kavanaugh and Daigle.

"I knew he was one of the top players in our area, and I knew he had a good chance to be a regional All-American," Perry said. "This is a great honor for E.J. and the program."

For the state award, Perry believes McCormick got the attention of coaches from the eastern half of the state when he competed with Fox Chapel in the East-West Classic at the beginning of the season.

"E.J. had a great weekend (at the Classic)," Perry said. "I think that really helped him."

McCormick does not have a scholarship offer, although he has received Division I interest. He hopes the state and national honors will draw the attention of college recruiters.

"We'll have to see where it goes from here," McCormick said. "I hope to attract some bigger schools when the list comes out."

McCormick, who has been playing soccer since he was 6, completed his high school career with 67 goals. He also helped Fox Chapel finish as the WPIAL Class AAA runner-up in 2003.

McCormick was recognized as the Valley News Dispatch Boys Soccer Player of the Year last week.
