Ohio man charged with making threat, trying to rape worker at N. Strabane hotel
An Ohio man who made a telephone threat to 911 that caused a Washington County hotel near a casino to be locked down for several hours and a SWAT team to respond was arraigned Monday on charges of sexually assaulting a female hotel worker.
John D. Heina, 31, of North Ridgeville was charged by North Strabane Township Police with attempted rape, sexual assault, indecent assault, two counts of simple assault and three counts of making terroristic threats for the incident that began at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cambria Suites Hotel on Racetrack Road and ended about noon when he was arrested.
Heina was taken to Washington Hospital for observation. He was released Monday morning and arraigned on multiple criminal complaints.
Township police allege Heina pulled a fire alarm, then called 911 and said he had a firearm and wanted to harm someone and himself. Partially clothed, Heina ran into a third-floor room where a housekeeper was working and held her against her will.
The housekeeper told investigators that when she saw Heina, he was nude and demanded sex.
“(Heina) held her hands behind her back, physically overpowering her and preventing her from moving freely,” Officer Jonathan Miles states in the affidavit of probable cause.
When Heina left the room temporarily, the housekeeper called for help, police said. When Heina quickly returned, he pulled the telephone from the woman's hands and struggled with her, police said.
Police allege Heina overpowered the woman, forced her to the floor, opened her blouse and attempted to pull down her pants.
As Heina, still naked, lay on top of the victim, police said two hotel workers entered the room and pulled him away. The workers detained him until police arrived.
Because Heina said he had a gun, the Washington County Regional SWAT team was called and searched the four-story hotel and its room. No gun was found.
The hotel is on a busy commercial stretch of Racetrack Road between I-79 and Meadows Racetrack and Casino.
North Strabane District Judge Jay Weller ordered Heina jailed on $100,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing March 23.
