Newsmaker: Tamika Duck
Noteworthy: The Pennsylvania Association of Private School Administrators honored Duck with its 2015 Distinguished Graduate Award, given to a Pennsylvanian who overcomes barriers to achieve post-graduate success.

Background: Duck, the only provider for two young children, could not find steady work when she moved to Pittsburgh a few years ago, despite her two degrees and experience as sports information director at Virginia Union. The single mom found temporary shelter in transitional housing, where she also volunteered. She sought a scholarship from a private foundation to expand her skills, and in July 2013 enrolled in Goodwill Employment Training Center. In May 2014, UPMC hired Duck full time. On the side, Duck continues to compile game statistics for the men's basketball team at Community College of Allegheny County. She's also president of Kingsley Association Parent Council.
Education: Bachelor's degree in mass communication/public relations from Virginia Union University and a master's degree in sport management from Virginia State University
