British health study finds coffee, with some exceptions, beneficial

Looking for something to read with your morning coffee? The BMJ (formerly known as the British Medical Journal) has a lengthy report complete with flowcharts, slideshows and graphs on the health effects of drinking coffee.

The study analyzes several research studies and concludes that more rigorous research is needed, but drinking coffee is generally safe and may reduce the risk of some health problems such as cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

The largest risk reductions come at three to four cups a day, the study says. Coffee does have negative effects during pregnancy, causing low birth weights, premature births and pregnancy loss, and it also has a detrimental effect on women who have a high risk of bone fractures, the study says.
