Alle-Kiski Laurels & Lances
Lance: To the Tarentum Council. Are we the only ones who think the appointment of Councilman Michael Gutonski to be borough manager reeks of a political deal? Didn't think so. The ol' boys club in Tarentum doesn't miss a chance to take care of their own. This comes six months after hiring council President Tim Raap to be a water plant operator after he got fired from his ATI job for stealing.
Laurel: To Riley Farneth. The Freeport Area High School senior is transforming a vacant lot in Freeport into a community garden. Not many efforts both beautify a community and provide fresh vegetables for neighbors and the needy.
Lance: To lazy voters. Tuesday's election nominated the people responsible for educating our children, making our communities safe and spending a lot of our tax money. These are people you can call on the phone or talk to at the supermarket. But about 80 percent of Alle-Kiski Valley voters stayed home. If you don't vote, don't complain.
On the “Watch List”: Memorial Day weekend. Two things to remember. Take a long pause to remember the reason for Memorial Day and the ultimate sacrifices so many made so we could enjoy this long weekend. Break out Old Glory — if you don't have one, buy one! Fly it high and free in their memory and in thanks. Second, be careful out there. The highways and rivers will have lots of traffic. Don't become a statistic.
