Saturday essay: Seeds of dreams

An even dozen Christmas catalogs arrived in the mail the other day. The hard sell is on. But that's OK.

Really, it is. For many of these catalogs can bring out the kid in us — sometimes marveling at the toys of today, other times finding that a clever marketer has learned that making toys of a long passed age can capture the imagination (and the wallets) of buyers long past childhood.

And at least one marketer is even more clever. Tucked into that recent catalog horn of plenty was the first of the 2016 seed catalogs. This one promises to be “mighty affordable” with “over 550 varieties.” It is and there are.

The garden has been put to bed but it's not quite fast asleep. The garlic tips keep pushing through the insulating straw. And the leaves of the celery whose seeds were sown en masse in April still are being harvested. But the seed catalog is a nice opportunity to dream of spring.

This particular catalog features nearly 17 full pages of tomato varieties. Seventeen. Visions of sugarplums dancing in moi's head? Pshaw! Try visions of 78-day, 12-ounce Cherokee Carbon Hybrid tomatoes being harvested next summer.

Georgia gardener Marie Huston once reminded that “the gardening season officially begins on Jan. 1 and ends on Dec. 31.” Lots of us resemble that remark.
