Letter to the editor: Praise for Roger Eckels
It has been a great pleasure to watch Mt. Pleasant District Judge Roger Eckels’ service as a judge and advocate (“Veteran Mt. Pleasant District Judge Roger Eckels retires,” March 29, TribLIVE).
Eckels always was willing to step forward when needed to volunteer or help in the community. He participated in Westmoreland County Community College’s Criminal Justice Week numerous times and spoke at many college and Mt. Pleasant School District events — and anywhere else he was asked, including Narcan education sessions. He is a consistent presence in the community, in the county and in the commonwealth.
As a former Mt. Pleasant Borough police officer and Westmoreland County detective, Eckels saw law enforcement from various perspectives in over four decades of service. Whether you were a defendant, defense attorney, public defender or employee of the county district attorney’s office, you were treated with fairness and respect. He always took the time to listen to all sides of an issue before ruling, and was open to new ideas.
Eckels has been a great role model for the youth of our area. He is a true public servant. Best wishes after a remarkable career.
The writer is an instructor at Westmoreland County Community College.
