The Trib should be applauded for addressing reality in the editorial “The ObamaCare treatment: Hold on to your wallets” (Oct. 15 and TribLIVE.com). Instead, Media Matters for America ( mediamatters.org) throws a punch, then dodges the truth.
The left-wing activist group devoted to “correcting conservative misinformation” labels the editorial an attack on ObamaCare premiums and calls the Commonwealth Foundation's analysis misleading.
Its complaint? Our premium analysis did not take tax credits or subsidies into account.
First, Media Matters doesn't dispute that premiums will skyrocket. It's now plain to both sides that ObamaCare will significantly inflate health insurance costs across the state for all age groups.
Plus, many will not qualify for government giveaways that artificially hide the real costs from consumers. In fact, the Manhattan Institute estimates less than half of Pennsylvania's uninsured qualify for a tax credit.
Where do these subsidies or tax credits come from? The very same people shopping on the “exchange”!
ObamaCare includes more than 20 taxes to pay for these tax credits. One adds a 2.3-percent surcharge to every medical-device sale.
The federal government is simply taking dollars from taxpayers' pockets and giving $1.2 trillion in subsidies to insurance companies over the next 10 years to claim “significant savings.”
Don't be fooled: The real cost of health care is skyrocketing, and we're all paying.
