Carrier's commonwealth connections
Western Pennsylvania is proud of its contributions to the next-generation aircraft carrier, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). As Craig Smith covered in “Export native to take helm of Navy's newest warship, USS Gerald Ford” when the ship is delivered to the U.S. Navy next year, a Western Pennsylvania native, Capt. John Meier, will be at the helm of this “game changer.”
But Western Pennsylvania's contributions don't end there.
When Ford enters the fleet, some of its parts and systems will have been designed and manufactured by our neighbors, friends, and family members here in Pennsylvania. My company, Global/SFC Valve Corp. in Somerset is one of the more than 100 companies in Pennsylvania that contribute to the construction and maintenance of aircraft carriers.
Western Pennsylvania supports those who serve our nation by helping to build the largest, most powerful, and most technologically advanced ship ever.
Ford will soon take its place in the nation's carrier fleet, where it will be the cornerstone of U.S. military supremacy around the globe. When it does, let's pause and recognize this ship's deep personal and manufacturing roots here in the Commonwealth.
Best wishes to Capt. Meier as he takes command of the USS Gerald R. Ford.
