Pittsburgh Tribune-Review athletes of the week: Aliquippa's Stephon McGinnis, West Mifflin's Miranda Ferguson
Claim to fame: McGinnis drained six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 32 points to lead the Quips to a 95-71 win over Monessen in the PBC High School Classic on Jan. 25 at Montour. He chipped in 20 points in a 67-41 win over Northgate on Jan. 27. He is averaging 25 points in the previous six games since starting point guard Jordan Jassir went down with an injury.
You've really stepped up and carried the load in Jordan Jassir's absence. How has your role has changed?
My role has changed because he was a dynamic scorer. I'm just trying to score for the both of us to kind of keep it the same.
How confident are you in your own game as the playoffs approach?
I'm very confident in my game. We have big scorers on our team, so I can look to dish it if I have to get other players involved.
Do you feel like being an undefeated team comes with a bull's eye?
Yeah there are a lot of teams coming for us. Some teams know we have a perfect season so they try to play us maybe a bit harder than other teams.
Have you decided where you want to attend college?
No. I'm undecided. La Roche, Clarion, Geneva, Bethany and Chatham have all reached out to me.
— Brian Graham
School: West Mifflin
Claim to fame: Ferguson scored 20 points for the Titans (6-13, 3-7) in a 54-40 loss to Section 4-AAA opponent South Park last week.
How did you start playing basketball?
I started playing in first grade. I had played softball for a while, and I wanted to try something different so I tried basketball.
Who has been your toughest opponentthis season?
Our whole section is tough. Elizabeth Forward and South Park are both really good. We had really good games with both of them this season. It's just been a tough year because of our section.
Do you like offense or defense more?
I would say offense even though my defense has been improving. I find scoring much more rewarding.
What else do you enjoy doing?
I'm also in the marching band. Other than that, I just like hanging out with my friends and things like that.
